What is Savate Kickboxing?
What is savate kickboxing? It’s actually a form of French martial art. You may have also heard it referred to as boxe française, French boxing, French kickboxing or French footfighting. However, people often automatically assume a few things when they hear kickboxing, so it should be noted that this form of martial art does not allow the use of shins, elbows or knees as some other forms of martial arts do. It most certainly still delivers highly effective attacks and very capable self-defense techniques. That is one of the reasons that this particular style appeals to such a wide audience.
Savate kickboxing is considered a more modern martial art with western roots. Referring to it as modern most certainly makes sense when you consider that the martial art of kung fu sees its origins dating back thousands of years ago. The savate style can only be traced back by approximately two centuries. And where kung fu birthed from a need to train its military soldiers for hand-to-hand combat, savate kickboxing arose out of a need for an effective structure for street fighting in the streets of France.
Since this form of martial art does not allow shins, elbows or knees, use of the whole foot is included in each of the kicking attacks. These attacks feature a dynamic combination of targeting, counter-maneuvering and varying intensities to help pupils and opponents adjust to different scenarios. After all, because the origins trace back to street fighting, this style of martial art consistently demonstrates techniques that help individuals handle situations that mirror that of a street brawl.
